Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) and Division of Anaesthesiology

Introduction
The OMFS Department performs service function for diagnosis and surgical management and diseases, injuries and defects of both the functional and aesthetic aspects of the oral and maxillofacial region. This includes curative, preventive, reconstructive or emergency care for disorders related to the teeth, mouth, jaws and facial structures.
Third and final year dental students practice exodontia and minor oral surgical procedures under close supervision of academic staff while Consultant staff performs major OMFS procedures in collaboration with the consultants of the Division of Anaesthesiology and relevant staff of the Ministry of Health.

Treatment procedures offered at OPD units

• Oral Surgery Student Practice Clinic (PABX 7407)
The Oral Surgery clinic has 18 cubicles for the hands on practice of minor oral surgery procedures by third and final year dental students under close supervision of academic staff. First visit patients are being referred from the diagnostic clinic and other department clinics. Patients require extraction of teeth and surgical removal of impacted teeth and other minor oral surgery procedures are being treated in this clinic

• Oral & Maxillo-Facial Surgery (OMFS) Clinic (PABX 7509)
The OMFS clinic conducts specialist consultation sessions weekday mornings by the Senior Academic staff of the department. Patients need surgical care for  Cleft Lip & Palate, Oral Cancer, Facial deformity, Facial Trauma and other related conditions are being seen in this clinic and suitable cases are being discussed with students. The patients selected for surgical care are being admitted to the dental ward. In addition this clinic maintain and accept patients referred  from other hospitals for specialized surgical management and casualty cases.

• Minor Operation Theatre (MOT) (PABX 7408)
MOT performs minor cases such as surgical removal of impacted teeth, biopsy procedures and related operations.

• Speech therapy Clinic
 University speech and language therapist conducts specialized treatment sessions on weekdays for patients with speech abnormalities. This involve post operative speech rehabilitation of children treated for cleft lip and palate.

Treatment procedures offered for Indoor patients

• Dental Ward   (PABX 7416)
The Dental Ward has about 40 beds divided for children, female and male cubicles. Senior academic staff being university consultants, the ward is managed by a team of junior dental officers, nursing officers and support staff from MOH.

• Dental Operating Theatres (PABX 7412 )
Twin operating theatres with modern facilities for moderate and major operative procedures such as  Repair of Cleft Lip and Palate, Resection of Oral cancer and reconstruction with pedicled or microvascularfree flap, maxillo-facial Osteotomy procedures, maxillo-facial trauma are being conducted by the University consultants of OMF Surgery and Anaesthesiology disciplines with the help of junior medical/dental officers, nursing staff and support staff from MOH.

• Dental Intensive Care Unit  (PABX 7413)
In this three bedded unit, Senior academic staff of division of  anaesthesiology assisted by junior medical officers, nursing and support staff from MOH perform management of critically ill patients who need ICU care. In addition the unit take obver manegemnt of such patients being transferred from outside hospital whenever requested depending on the bed availability.

• Training Centre for MD OMFS training programme conducted by the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo

•Centre for capacity building training for local and overseas OMF Surgeons offering Certificate Training programmes in Surgical treatment of Oral Cancer, Cleft Lip & palate and Jaw deformities
 
• Multidisciplinary Joint Clinics conducted monthly in the disciplines of cleft lip and palate and facial deformities with relevant clinicians.

•Diagnosis and Therapy for Speech Disorders
(Lateral Video Fluoroscopy and Naso-Endoscopy)
